Torch Ginger / Walking Stick ('Awapuhi-ko'oko'o')

[Awapuhi-ko'oko'o - Torch Ginger]

This flower is best known as a 'torch ginger'. Seen here in Hilo's Pana'ewa rain forest, they are found throughout the Hawai'ian Islands and Malaysia. The Hawai'ian name is 'Awapuhi-ko'oko'o', which means "walking stick ginger". These can grow to 20 feet and the hearty cane-like stems are well-suited for the task.
