Said to be the best-preserved Romanesque-style church, the oldest building in Prague Castle, and the second oldest church in Prague, St. George's Basilica was founded by Prince Vratislav (915-921).
The Basilica was enlarged in 973 with the building of St. George's Benedictine Convent (to the left). The church was damaged by fire 11 centuries later (1142), and rebuilt. The Baroque facade was added in the 17th Century (1671-1691).
The altar painting and frescos in the dome are the work of V.V. Reiner.
Within the glass case at the bottom (center) of this shrine near the Basilica entrance, lie the remains of a 15-year old girl who was a devout worshipper in this church, and an inspiration to the congregation, memorialized and honored in this way through the centuries.
