Saint Basil's Cathedral
Red Square, Moscow
Cathedral of Intercession of the Virgin by the Moat [St. Basil's Cathedral]
This spectacular and unique icon of Russian history was built from 1555-1560, by 'Ivan the Terrible'.
Directly in front is an important national monument depicting Minin & Pozharsky, two heroes in resisting a Polish invasion in the 1600's.
According to legend, Ivan the Terrible blinded the architect of the cathedral to prevent anything like this from ever being built for anyone else. One sister cathedral does exist - in St. Petersburg.
