Kalaupapa Trail
Here's a muleback view from Kalaupapa Trail, down a steep sea cliff onto the secluded peninsula where, famously, Father Damien ministered to those whose fate forced them to live in exile on this 'leper colony'. There were 9 living residents here (by choice) as of July 2013, respectfully described today as survivors of 'Hansen's Disease'.
The discrepancy between the natural beauty and the human tragedy seen here is profound. Historical and powerful.
