This is from the Pana'ewa Rainforest gardens, near Hilo, one of the few images I took with my amphibious pocket Pentax (which I carried for underwater or tropical rain situations). I finally learned what this flowering plant is: Red Ginger (Alpinia purpurata), pink variant. Common in the Hawai'ian islands and across Asia, it can also be found in Florida. It is a fairly robust, low maintenance plant, growing quickly as long as it gets some water, sun and warmth.
