Originally built for the spacious comfort of New Yorkers far from the madding city (which ended around 14th Street at the time), this ode to the Dakotas lifestyle has been home to Leonard Bernstein, Paul Simon, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, and many other legends. This is where John Lennon lived-- and where he was shot to death in 1980, by Mark David Chapman. Gone was a shining light and a generation's remaining hope for a Beatles reunion.
Across the street is Strawberry Fields, just inside the entrance to Central Park, near theImaginemosaic memorial on the path where people still gather and sing tributes.
