These birds are fairly common in flat marshy areas of Florida, often seen near homes and ponds, walking, I have seen them together, couples and families walking along on grass or scrub in hot dry places. But this lucky one has a very nice nest in the sun.
Sandhill Cranes are now so populous in some areas of South Florida that they have become common to see strolling on roads, lawns, and golf courses. In some places one finds traffic signs warning of a 'Sandhill Crane Crossing'.
These birds are one of two types of cranes found in North America. The other is the much rarer whooping crane.
